Trump Calls for the Death Penalty

One day after saying he would consider sending suspected terrorist Sayfullo Saipov to Guantanamo Bay, President Trump issued a follow-up statement calling for something he said would be more swift and “appropriate” for his “horrible crime”: trying him in New York and making sure he gets the “DEATH PENALTY!”

“NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room. He killed 8 people, badly injured 12. SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!” wrote Trump in a series of tweets. “Would love to send the NYC terrorist to Guantanamo but statistically that process takes much longer than going through the Federal system… There is also something appropriate about keeping him in the home of the horrible crime he committed. Should move fast. DEATH PENALTY!”

On Tuesday afternoon, Saipov drove a U-Haul truck down a bike path for nearly a mile, mowing down pedestrians and cyclists before slamming into a school bus. When he exited his vehicle, police say he was yelling “Allahu Akbar!” His murderous rampage came to an end when an officer shot him in the abdomen.

After Saipov underwent surgery, he told investigators that he was “proud” of his actions. He also pledged allegiance to ISIS and investigators say they’ve found that he had immersed himself in radical Islamist propaganda.

Trump has made a number of statements on the attack, including initially suggesting he might try to send Saipov to Gitmo. The president has also hammered the “diversity visa lottery” program that allowed Saipov to enter the country back in 2010 simply because he was from a country which does not send many immigrants to the U.S., rather than based on merit.

As The Daily Wire highlighted, Trump revealed on Wednesday that Saipov “may have been able to help as many as 23 other individuals migrate to the United States, as part of a ‘chain migration’ that began when Saipov was awarded a green card.”

The president is now calling for the end of the “diversity lottery program,” which he said he is “starting the process of terminating.”
